Only custom date fields have first/last/newest/oldest options. I would consider also adding a 'today/now' option for custom date fields if that's what you mean.

Setting a specific value to a specific custom field is too... specific. EpubMerge presents you with the Edit Metadata dialog when a new merged book is created for exactly that sort of personal data management.
Yes, custom date columns. I use a "date added" custom column instead of the Calibre date column.

Ok about the edit metadata being too specific.
