What books you tried? All from the same source and do they have constantly some special css for the first <p> of each chapter, e.g. for some presentational effect like dropcaps or capitalized first word? I'd suspect so, and CR might not be rendering the trickery as expected. In that case, edit the epub and correct...
Or maybe you can change the default css to account for it (never really tried). Look in /ext1/system/share/cr3/
