The openness of the software is more because I don't think they see a point in locking it down. But, they also don't do anything to make it easy, and do not consider it to be their problem if a change they make breaks someone's hack.

Okay. It is as thought. Indifference and neglect rather then design. The same with Nook. Hopefully their indifference continues. I wonder why Sony and Amazon spend so much time locking down the OS when Kobo and Nook don't bother. Google don't do ereaders, but they are progressively locking down Android.
