To be clear, the "open" is about books, not the software or device. They used to make it clear that books could come from anywhere.
The openness of the software is more because I don't think they see a point in locking it down. But, they also don't do anything to make it easy, and do not consider it to be their problem if a change they make breaks someone's hack.
