Yup, MuPDF is fast. I never worked with DRM schemes and I don't know exactly what I'm talking about but I guess Kobo could be using MuPDF too. Using whatever kind of provided software to grant access to the pdf and, instead of rendering it using webkit, send it via a pipe so it can be proccesed by that library.
But manufacturers prefeer MIT/BSD licensed libraries, because merging AGPL software would make them obligated to release the entire source of nickel.
