I wasn't aware system used the system colors; I had thought it merely determined whether mode is light or dark, and then used its own theme. Perhaps it could do that, with some setting to toggle whether to auto-switch light dark according to system, customizable themes, and which theme to use for light and dark. It remains that the dark theme as such, on macOS, is of too much contrast.
Thanks for the preferences shortcut. Unsure if shortcuts are specific per platform, on macOS it is cmd-, which is a good default. Certainly, if it is customizable, better but defaults ideally conform to the OS.
If you had forgotten or hadn't had a chance to get around to it, mouse and trackpad scrolling in the viewer on macOS isn't great though in preferences, it works perfectly.
