At one time it was assumed that a business transaction between you and any company was private — that third party entities weren't entitled to personal information about you (via information purchase or other means). That a warrant was needed to obtain information about those who were suspected of committing a crime.
They even wrote an amendment to the U.S. Constitution about this...
The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. —
