Yeah, but that could potentially just be a one-time set up. I'm curious about if, once it was set up, could the device continue to work without talking to Roku Inc at all.

Cheaper, simpler, more convenient, and, since I've trans-coded my local media library to a compatible format, they play everything I needed them too. Definitely a good reason for a Roku account in my case.
