That is generally correct. The reason for the message is that the drive is marked as "dirty". If the drive is dirty, then it means that the last file operation didn't complete properly. That leaves the potential for a problem if the last write to the drive didn't complete properly.

I have had an occasional problem. Most times I wasn't surprised as I knew I messed up when I disconnected the device.

Which will only help if the device scans the disk during the startup it does after the signout. And, it would only be quicker if you only have a few books. I think the only reason it would be better is if the drive was actually corrupt and one of the affected files was the database.
