Mid-tier or character actors tend to have a lot of different money streams. It's amazing how many actors do voice work, i.e. radio commercials, voice over and audiobook narration. He might like doing them, but it's still a job that he gets paid for. It's no different than doing signings a SF conventions or guest spots on podcasts, it's all part of the job of being a working actor who isn't a star.
