Is this a case of a malfunctioning device that should be returned or am I missing something?

My guess:
it was frozen that can be a sign of a malfunctioning device. I never experienced this with any pocketbooks I owned and own.
To the experience my explanatory guesses.
1&2 device is frozen not reacting to any input if powerbutton is pressed not long enough it just triggers suspend which is not available at frozen status.
3) Longpressing powerbutton does switch the device off, since it is frozen before nothing to see on the screen.
4) After that device reboots, that should be recognizable by some changes on the screen.
