The pocketbook support emailed me with this approach:

In this case please accomplish the following actions:
1. Connect the device to the PC, preferably using another USB cable.
2. Press the power button an hold it pressed for at least 15-20 seconds.
The device must resume working.

Should it bring no result, leave the device for charging for 2 hours and try to reset it again.

If these recommendations did not help, proceed as follows:

1. Press and hold the Power button pressed for not less than 10 seconds (the device will go to the reset mode);
2. Continue holding the Power button pressed and connect the device to the wall charger (preferably) or to the PC via the USB cable;
3. Keep holding the Power button pressed for over one minute.
4. After you release the Power button, the device will turn on and you will see the “Low battery” message. Now please charge the e-reader normally for 2-3 hours and the device will boot.
For now I haven't had the issue for four days, so I can't test. I am finding the device to be incredibly laggy, though: Takes a while to switch to home screen, takes a while to go to dictionary lookup. Takes a while to get the markers to respond to highlight another line. Takes a while to get the markers to crop the page manually. I am incredibly patient it seems, because when I showed the device to a friend, I realized just how long it took: too long to show what the device could do.
