The style that @Joeldmtl linked to in post #7 is the only Kobo case I've ever seen with a flexible back. I believe it's TPU. I don't know if the ones on sale from multiple vendors are all identical from the same factory.
I've had one of these on my ClaraHD since they first came on sale. I liked it well enough that I bought a similar one for my Forma.
It's not something I'd contemplate doing myself but, if you're good with a craft knife, you should be able to cut off the front cover without damaging the TPU back shell in any way. Obviously that would remove the sleepcover feature (which works perfectly BTW).
The rubbery TPU shell peels off/on really easily when you want to read without a cover.
