Exactly. I don't want my rooms to be lit like a ballroom all the time in winter, and nothing less really suffices to make the older screens look as nice as the newer are. I like to read in a cozily dim room in the evening. The frontlight + the comfort light (neither cranked all the way up, of course) make the eink screen very nice and readable.
Yes, there are portable reading lights, but they're still not as good as a frontlit screen.
