There is actually a very good reason for Amazon to do this. I think that sooner or later they will change the awz format so it is not compatible with MobiPocket anymore. If a lot of customers have used a workaround to read DRM:ed MobiPocket books they will get a lot of complaints and they want to avoild this.
Amazon does not use the MobiPocket format for DRM:ed books. Currently the format they use happens to be compatible (or nearly identicla) with MobiPocket but that can change anytime.
