Super simple.
What's the big deal? Just give us the OPTION to keep the page as uncluttered and clean as possible.
From the voting so far, it is overwhelmingly obvious that the Calibre reading public agrees with the above humble request.

In case you don't understand how projects work, everything is done on priorities. They have to be as there is never enough time to do everything. The priorities are determined by things like how many people something affects, how many people are asking for something, is something actually broken and needs to be fixed before anyone can use it. And, especially for open source projects, is the change something the developer actively wants. Adding an option to not show the triangles in the reader becomes a low priority (not broken, not preventing use, there is a workaround, basically cosmetic, not being asked for by many people [your creative accounting aside]).
One of Kovid's favourite phrases here is "patches are welcome". If you think this is important, and "Super simple", then you are welcome to take a copy of the source code, make the appropriate changes, test them and then create a patch. At the least, raise a proper enhancement request. That will make sure Kovid knows it is desired and act as a reminder when looking at what changes he will do next. It doesn't guarantee it will be done, but it is more likely than complaints in a forum.
