The OP doesn't have cats and lives alone.
Still, I don't believe Amazon would do it purposefully. I regularly check the battery level of all my devices and never, ever has wifi been turned on. Just checked again (my Oases are on 5.12.2). Yep, airplane mode as always.
I'd suspect there's something wrong with the OP's device hardware-wise, as there were those ghostly page turns as well.
