I’m going to stick with Amazon and Apple. I’ve been using Apple devices since 1981. I like them even better today, especially with the data mining companies like Google as competition—I won’t ever trust those blood suckers. Kobo made good hardware, but the Kobos I had were FW challenged, and the bookstore was pretty sparse. Amazon has a great bookstore and their Kindles have enough formatting capability built in now I no longer need to modify books. I can just simply read and know my books are synced. I’ll let those with more years left on this Earth than I have spend more time with calibre than reading, I chose to read rather than mess around with my library in some digital swamp!
I guess a lot of people get bent out of shape about so-called walled gardens and proprietary formats, but the way I look at things, if they work and serve my purposes without exposing my data to anyone who wants to spy on it, then I’m happy.
