FWIW i don't buy the $50 to send it back store either , unless the OP is in Antartica?
last time I sold an unwanted Kindle on Ebay it cost me < £4 to ship it, signed for.
Amazon are in so many countries now, surely it would be returned to the nearest on; also, amazon pay all return postage on defective items , in warranty, sold by amazon. They used to even send a courier to collect it though in Uk they have phased that out in favour of you print a label then take it to the nearest of thousands of drop off points
