In many cases, You don't even need to open the book in the editor.
Calibre has a Edit TOC plugin that can be added to your toolbar. Preferences: Toolbars:
(very similar to the one inside the Editor)
These do offer alternate ways over the more basic, from Headers that Sigil uses (which I still use frequently
