Thanks for the responses. My issue is still continuing and it seems to be affecting the authors when they are sorted and my app will close sometimes when I look at the books details. I can now sort the books by Date and that puts them into alphabetical order but I do not have the corresponding index running down the side so I still have to scroll through all of my books to find what I want.
I have deleted the app, restored my iPad to factory settings and then started from scratch again but it still didn't work. I hope it can be fixed soon because it is soooooo frustrating especially when you finally get to the book you want, tap it to look at the details and the app closes.
