I've never experience a wifi that my kindle won't connect to except for one at a local grocery store that seems to only broadcast on 5 GHz.
And given that I have unlimited "5mbps" tethering on my phone plan...
(That said, you might have to manually open the browser and click through an invalid certificate error or in some cases use something like neverssl.com to trigger the captive portal)
