Sometimes mine will work when I don't do a manual sync but it's not reliable. I just do the sync each time I quit when I want to sync.
Alternately I'll often just remember a key phrase on the top of the page when I stop reading. Something short. On my current book I might use "mother was pale". Then when I begin on a different device I'll use text search to find that. Sometimes that phrase will occur a few times but search gives me enough context that I know which one it is. All in all I find this faster than using whispersync but it's more trouble so I don't always do it.
