At times, he's tried from the system tray USB icon, right-clicking in Explorer and selecting eject, using calibre's eject and the calibre SmartEject plugin. He got failures with all of those methods. Dancing widdershins around a blasted oak at midnight on a new moon was not tried but was rapidly approaching the top of his things to try list.
The only way he found to minimize his issues was to safely eject using any of the above methods or shutdown his computer and then leaving the Nook connected for 10-15 minutes before disconnecting the USB cable.
So far his Forma has behaved itself other than occasionally complaining about the dirty bit being set when he connects it to his computer. The ease of downloading his books from Kobo's store more than makes up for that issue in his opinion.
