I'm not entirely understanding this bug or what you need, but I just loaded 3 old epubs with an .xpgt into 0.9.991(build 211 for Mac) and Sigil had no problems opening the epub.

Let me know if there are any tests you'd like me to run or what sort of results you need to help.
