One reviewer is not significant numbers of consumers. Even a majority of mobileread readers aren't statistically significant.

And I've never drowned a phone, ereader, tablet, notebook or videogame console in my life therfore waterproofing makes no sense.
Of course not.
I'm not saying there's no benefit to waterproofing electronics. My assertion is that Apple made it A Thing as a threat to third party repair first, a beneficial feature for consumers second, and that other manufacturers have followed either for the same reasons or to avoid being seen as behind the state of the art.
