If the mini size reader had been a success, Kobo would have kept making them. Card slots as well...the majority of users don't want/need them. And you can't get the water resistance in readers with card slots.
It's not cost effective for companies to produce niche products. There will always be a minority or users who want them, but that doesn't make them profitable to produce.
