Not really. The high-end eink readers are luxury items and priced accordingly. You can alway buy a lower-tier reader or read on a tablet.

The luxury items aren't priced by any rational principle or logic, but what people are willing to pay for them. Apparently there are enough customers willing to cough up money for a high-end reader. I have to admit I'm one of them. Would I buy a Lamborghini? Never, even if I had that kind of money (which I don't). Cars just don't interest me enough. Would I buy a Kindle Oasis? Yes, because I want that reading experience the Oasis would give. Would I buy a high-end laptop? Again yes, because what I get with an expensive laptop is important to me. Would I buy a 600$ smartphone? No, because the absolutely best phone experience isn't a priority for me. I'm perfectly content with mid-tier phones.

So it all comes down to what your priorities are and whether that high-end experience is important to you.
