The opening paragraph:
"FAR beyond the North-West Frontiers of India lies the mountain-locked land of Yanistan. Wild, and for the most part barren, split by chasm-like gorges and narrow twisting valleys, through which tumble a hundred turbulent streams, it is a land of savage desolation, inhabited by a people like itself— rugged and cruel."
And the story leaps into action, with the British Resident in Yanistan's capital murdered and his beautiful daughter kidnapped by the feared tribal leader The Cobra: six feet 9 inches of bearded malevolence.
There are distinct traces of occult in the story, and much of the action takes place in the lost city of Prester John.
EDIT:
This is the first of four Colin Grey adventure novels, as follows:
King Cobra (1933)
White Python (1934)
The Poisoned Mountain (1935)
Nine Lives (1937)
(I can't find an accessible text of "The Poisoned Mountain").
From the newspaper serial; at 89,000 words, it is unlikely that it has been condensed for serial use.
