Among the products Apple creates are shares of Apple stock. Shareholders love subscriptions.

Look at what happened with ADBE and ADSK when they moved to subscription models and away from the uncertainty of upgrade revenue. Of course those companies, like Apple, do not rely solely on subscriptions, but it does help ameliorate shareholder worries about, say, how the next hardware product(s) will do.
