I have sent a PM with the link to the image. Restoring that to the card should get the device working.

You can put book into the book partition when the card is out of the device. But, the device won't automatically pick them up. It happens when the device is disconnected from the USB. Depending on what is actually wrong, it might trigger this when you plug in to charge and disconnect.
