Firstly, in calibre you are much better to keep the various metadata attributes as they are intended. You can do some fiddling when sending the book to the device.
On the device, if you are using the native Kobo application, then it supports series information. It will display, sort and search the series info. Unfortunately, the way the device works means you need to send your books to the device, disconnect to let it import the books and then reconnect to get the update.
If you are using KOreader or something else, or still want the details in the title, then you can use a metadata plugboard to set the metadata to what you want during the send. There are some threads with examples that you can use for this.

I see I've been missing a lot. Been using kobo for 6 years or so and wasn't using all it's "potential". It was mainly, get file, paste file in folder and read.
Only just a few weeks ago i known about the pluggin in calibre to convert the files to kepub (that improved massively the reading experience).
