@rogerty: No, pbchess uses a dedicated launcher (fmon), and KSM *is* a dedicated launcher.
To avoid wreaking havoc on unsuspecting users doing exactly what you did, launchers are mutually exclusive. That is absolutely not news, so, not related to recent updates

Between fmon and KFMon, the latest one installed will take (which explains what you've been observing), while KSM will shortcut everything.
You could probably create a KFMon config file to launch pbchess & co, but that'll take a bit of effort since it bundles fmon, and it may be using/launching it in a number of unexpected ways.
I personally have no interest in doing something like that.
KSM might be able to handle the mess on its own, but I have no experience with KSM, so you'll have to go ask in KSM's thread (which I've now seen you did,
