The Mysteries of Udolpho was Ann Radcliffe's fourth and most popular novel, and was published in 1794. It is set in France and Italy, and has a complex plot involving a young woman whose aunt (her only surviving relative) marries an evil Italian count, and her escape to eventually marry a young Frenchman.
