That was a truly weird glitch. The modify epub saved settings in gui.json ( the lines between "modify epub plugin:options dialog:settings": { and }, ) had a couple of lines in the middle which looked like someone had banged their head on the keyboard. After deleting that section, Modify Epub came up with nothing selected. After setting my usual settings, everything seemed to be working again and that section in gui.json was recreated.
