Maybe the store’s warehouse is very cold?
Try to have your Kindle in a very warm room (25 degC and above) for a few hours and then read again.
I remember my e-ink devices had very slow response and noticeable ghosting in winter (outside temp -30 degC), but they restored to normal once I warmed them up at home.
