There are more people wearing glasses since people have been looking at screens, phones, etc than ever before.

Sure you maybe lucky and no eye issues but there are many who are not so lucky.
I have pretty bad eyes, actually. Genetically so (been wearing glasses since elementary school, that's almost forty years ago). If my eyes have not been damaged by computers and smartphones, I really doubt that healthier eyes would be.

As to people wearing glasses more, I rather think it might be because you could get by without wearing them in the pre-internet days, even if you actually needed them. Many people simply didn't want to wear glasses back then and were ashamed of them. No one is ashamed of glasses nowadays. Also now it's usual to have your eyes checked regularly. I suspect that lots of people didn't even know they needed glasses 30 and more years ago. That was especially true of children.

Still, keeping the screen brightness constantly too high probably could cause some damage over time. What's "too high" is very subjective, of course. But there certainly are people out there who don't pay enough attention to the backlight level of their devices.
