A book in KFX format should be automatically converted for viewing when opened in the calibre viewer as long as the KFX Input plugin is installed. It works for me. Perhaps there is an incorrect setting in your calibre installation.

The Kindle Previewer expects books in KFX format to have a .azw8 extension.
This post provides a method of also allowing it to open files with a .kfx extension if you are using Windows.
