Just tell your friend to indicate that the kindle is a gift when he purchases it then all you have to do is register it under your US Amazon account. As for the purchasing and downloading of books from Amazon, it's very simple. Purchase a gift card (can be purchased with a non-US issued credit card) and pay for your books using the gift cards. You can download your purchased books from Amazon under "Manage my Kindle" directly to your PC and then upload them to your Kindle via the USB cable. They will be readable on your Kindle because the purchases would have been made under your Amazon account where you registered your Kindle.
I live in Singapore. Haven't gotten my Kindle yet but this is what I intend to do...to make things simplier for me, I created a second Amazon account specifically for my Kindle so that I don't get myself all confused lol.
