Thank you both for your replies.
My needs are very simple - - I just need a reader. So the increased sophistication of calibre is nice to have but not essential. I would like to stress that this conclusion is purely a reflection of what I want to do with this software and is in no way a criticism of calibre itself, which is excellent.
