Nothing you’ve said alters the fact that in ebooks there is no reason for page numbers to be at the bottom. I’d also point out that for a time the adobe page number option on Kobo readers put the page numbers on the side of the screen in ePub so you should be very familiar with that. I’m not sure if it still happens with newer firmware since I’ve long ago given up on ePub and use kepubs, it’s also one of the first options I disable and patch to the invert screen option instead. However that means even for ereaders you’re factually wrong about the page numbers always being at the bottom.
