You literally provide the argument against yourself in your rebuttal.

Just because previous ereaders have done it, does not mean it needs to be done that way.

You are entitled to your opinion, however your opinion is not fact. And literal centuries of books demonstrate that it is just a matter of design for where page numbers go.
