4.14 is the last release where this was working properly. Perhaps on the surface it's a minor annoyance, but I see it as an unnecessary battery drain on the device.

Recreation steps are simple:
- With the backlight off, power down or allow the device to power itself down.
- Start the device by sliding the red switch.
- When it comes on the backlight will be on at it's lowest setting, and the backlight indicator will have a slash across it indicating the light is off.
- If you try to increase the light intensity by sliding your finger up the side of the screen it won't work.
- To turn off the light you need to turn it on by the black button, then turn the backlight off.
There has never been any bugs regarding the backlight. It's always worked perfectly well at always being off. There is no way at all to turn the backlight on.

That's because it's impossible to have a backlight with eInk. You have to have a front light.
