Which is exactly what I do - i.e. download first, but I then I click OK (to save what's there) which puts me back to the book list - and then I fix any other columns that need fixing - usually in the Book list via F2.

Ah ha - in metadata edit config I have Author and Title unchecked, I set those in the file name before I add the book.

I'm the same on the tags, never download them, same with ratings.

I'm not saying you must do a save after downloads, I'm just saying that's what I do. I think I started doing it as described when I had similar problems as yourself, which was soon after I started using calibre in Mar 2012.
