I haven't run into the age issue with Simon Vance, but I agree it can be a factor even with favorite narrators. I can't remember what book it was, but I know I abandoned a book read by Nadia May, also one of my favorites, because her voice was too old for the story.

The flip side, and it pains me to make a sex-specific condemnation, are narrators who are too young for the story as evidenced by their over-inflection, which just grates. Unfortunately, I've just run into this with women; perhaps it's because I'm not interested in whatever books are being read by young male narrators.
