I had the opposite experience. All my history classes did was bang on about WW2 with occasional references to earlier wars. No cultural histories, no WW1.

I hated history class, but later became an avid reader of both non-fiction history and historical fiction. I'm just not interested in war stories in general, though I took an interest in WW1.
