And yes, you can float the validation window, at your chosen width. Onto a second monitor if you have one (highly recommended). Your 'preference' not to maybe should be examined.

@ew - for the task at hand I have three main windows side by side - IrfanView, Sigil and PageView.
Because I am using Pageview I don't need Sigil's Preview, so I was hoping to get more vertical screen-estate by docking the Validation window where it 'normally' lives, on the right edge. The messages from proselint link to the code so for me at least having a semi-detached Validation window is not on.
I don't have the physical real estate for another monitor.
My query regarding not being able to dock the Validation window on the right edge was to check that I hadn't missed something. I hadn't so I'll live with what we have -
You can't always get what you want (Jagger '69).
