Ok. It seems that the phone isn't sealed very well if that is all he did.

My own favorite phone destroyer is put it in a pants pocket, put it in the washing machine, set on HEAVY wash for very dirty work clothes with a generous amount of soap.

That did the trick, and cleaning and drying the phone using all the techniques that are talked about failed to revive it.
