Probably by turning it off and on in the middle of the scan you corrupted the database, which is why a factory reset was needed. It was really hard for me to not bother it too. :->

Before I update the firmware, I plug the Kobo into the computer and copy everything that's on it. That way I have a backup just in case. That's the way I suggest doing it,
