So if you are going to take advantage of the new external drive support in files on the iPhone or older iPads, be aware that the USB-Lightning adapter may not supply enough power for all drives, even when plugged in. I had no problem with SSDs and jump drives, but when trying to attach a 2.5” HDD to my iPhone the drive simply wasn’t getting enough power. Fortunately I was able to get it to work with the addition of a powered hub in the chain, though unfortunately this makes the whole set up less portable than I would like.

I suppose this shouldn’t be too surprising, as the adapter wasn’t originally designed for this at all.
